Hi, I'm still here
You know it's bad when your mom asks why you haven't updated your blog (hi mom!).

Still fighting the good fight with the help of modern medicine. Hopefully I'll be on an even keel soon and not so damn tired all the time. Except for, y'know, bedtime.

The weekend started Thursday night when we went to the former Kenney's to see Eric's band CQ and the Corrections play. Enjoyable, as usual, especially with my own special shout-out and replayed song since I missed it the first time around.

Friday dawned with a small headache that just grew until lunchtime when I thought I'd either be sick or lose my mind, so I came home and passed out. Woke up still having it, but we'd made plans with friends, so we went to the movies to see The Prestige. I had no interest, but it turned out to be really cool. Done by the same guys who did Memento and really reminded me of it.

Today was spent just being lazy, as it was the perfect day-- rainy and windy. We went out for a bit to Target to get some Halloween candy. Hopefully we got enough. We ran out last year and had to run to the car in between kids to hit up CVS. This year if we run out, maybe I will start handing out Ambien. It's better than candy!

I'm super excited about the big trick-or-treating extravaganza on Tuesday, though I still don't know what I'm going to be. I fail at Halloween. Any suggestions?

Another A+ for St Francis hospital
This morning was spent in the ER at St Francis. A severe hypoglycemic reaction. Yuck! Thanks to my quick-acting friends and husband, I was back in shape in no time. Well, maybe 2-2.5 hours. Still, better than my last trip to the ER!

In actuality, they gave me OJ with sugar in it (mmm, tasty ...) and some dextrose via IV, and a bit of a chicken salad sandwich. Just need to follow up with the doctor to lower my insulin. I win! Fortunately, after 14 years with this disease, this episodes are few and far between. Unfortunately, they can just be so unpredictable. Like, 99.9% of my hypoglycemia episodes are resolved in 10 minutes at my desk. Something was just different this time. Who knows.

Then I came home and slept. I was going to go back to work, but it was strongly suggested that I not. I'm glad I didn't, I guess I was more worn out than I thought. Plus the IV-attempt sites HURT. Yeeee-ouch. It didn't even work until I was lying in a bed, so there were a couple of attempts.

In conclusion, Amanda and Beth, you rock! Dear husband, you rock! St Francis nurses, you rock!

Names: Go figure

How many have your name?

I got to talking with the receptionist at my rheumatologist's office and apparently the book Freakonomics goes into comparing the names of children born to highly educated parents vs. the names of children born to less educated parents and Flannery is high on the list of names given by highly educated parents. Go mom! I should check this book out.

Edited: Ah ha, thanks to my Google-fu, I have found the same thing in an article in Slate by the authors of Freakonomics. Check out the accompanying sidebar that projects the most popular names of 2015, based on this trend. Victory and an off-the-shelf personalized mug may soon be mine!

Just an any old kind of day
My morning started with a knife to the brain. Okay, it was a migraine, but ya coulda fooled me. As I said when I called in sick to work, I just stayed very still and quiet in bed. Even managed to sleep a bit, which was awesome. Have I mentioned that I haven't slept in 4 nights? So I guess the stress I've been under with my health and the new medications and the not sleeping just caught up with me.

I woke up around lunchtime and had lunch, then worked from home for a bit. I love the internet.

Nate came home and we ran some errands. We tried to go to Wood-n-Tap for dinner but the wait was 45 minutes. 45 MINUTES! They should just reserve a table for us every night. We would have waited, but we also had planned to see a movie so we got out of there. We made it to the movie, which was Man of the Year. It was ... actually pretty good. However, I love politics and media, so I liked it. I could see how others might not, if they weren't expecting and didn't appreciate the weird turn the movie took. It was a comedy and then it became a political/corporate thriller. It kind of reminded me of The Net mixed with Dave. Anyway, I'd recommend it, but it's one of Robin Williams' darker comedies.

We had an interesting experience in that, about 15 minutes or so in, the audio track of the movie was replaced with the sleepy pre-preview elevator music drivel. It lasted for a good couple of minutes. That was finally resolved when, at another pivotal moment, the audio dropped entirely. Then the video switched to those weird pre-preview trivia screens, then started to burn. Eventually the problems were straightened out and the movie continued uninterrupted. And hey, score, free passes for the Crown!

Now we're home and watching Newsradio. Does it get any better?

Ah, domestic bliss at its most boring.

Enjoying a day off
Today we were one of the fortunate businesses to have off for Columbus Day. This is the second job I've had where Mondays have been "dark" days, so it's easy enough to give them as holidays.

I spent the morning of my day off driving out to Windsor to get bloodwork done. Why, you ask, when there are plenty of Quest labs in my area? Well, many who know me know that I'm a tough stick when it comes to bloodwork. I'm terrified of it as it is, then it usually takes at least two tries to get anything from me. So, when a friend kept recommending his fiance's mother to me, I decided to give it a shot. Well, I'm still in awe. It was so easy! No hyperventilating, no panic, and only one stick! She didn't even have to move the needle around. It was definitely worth it. If this once-a-week bloodwork keeps up, it might get tough going to Windsor for each one, but hopefully that's over with.

But, other than that, it's been a restful day off. Tonight, we're going to look at new living room furniture at Ikea. We've had this old stuff from Nate's old dorm, that had been purchased at the Salvation Army, for awhile and I'm tired of it. It just feels gross and full of college boy germs. Plus it's way too big for the room.

A sweet slice of New England life
Well, after a fantastic night with friends, Mexican tequila (Lisa we used your excellent shower gift for margarita drinking!), and the Goldroc, today we went a more sedate route and checked out the Southington Apple Harvest Festival that Amanda talks about. We couldn't wait in the ginormous line for apple fritters, so we settled for that fair favorite: kettle corn. It was a perfect fall day and I'm glad we took advantage of it.

We're home for a few minutes before we head out to Hole in the Wall to see Picasso at the Lapin Agile starring Alan as Picasso!

We've crammed so much into this weekend so far that it feels like Sunday. It's even a bonus holiday weekend!

Edited on Sunday: Picasso was awesome. Kit (as Einstein) and Alan (as Picasso) played off each other so well. And c'mon, there's a freakin DANCE BREAK! It's only playing one more weekend (next Friday and Saturday) at Hole in the Wall in New Britain. HITW is a cool space to see shows in because you're RIGHT THERE. Suggested donation is $15, which is a bargain for this show! There's even free parking!

Semi-charmed kinda life
What have I been up to?

Well, first I did this:

(Immediately post-ceremony. If you look closely, you can see Lisa in the background!)

Then I did this:

(On the cliffs at Tulum. Sigh.)

Then I jumped back into real life full-force with both feet. From an email I sent to a friend:

So, this morning started with the discovery that Honda took our car payment SIX times. I called Honda when the call center opened and they have no idea what happened. They have me fax them a bank statement showing what the balance was, the 6 debits, and the new balance.

I leave at 11 for a doctors appointment. Just the regular three-month thing, so I'm not nervous or anything. Well, the doctor does all the usual listening to breathing and heart rate. He asks me if I can feel my heart racing. I can't. He looks worried and orders an EKG, which they show up to do less than a minute later. Still nothing wrong on the EKG (I had 2 of them, plus an echo, in the hospital). He orders more bloodwork. He wants me back in a month.

I go to Quest lab to get blood drawn for the rheumatologist cause I have an appointment next Thursday and I was supposed to get this done before the wedding. They stick me twice to get it all. And they ask me what grade I'm in.

I get back to work, call Honda. They have no idea when the problem will be resolved, suggest that I file a dispute with my bank saying I didn't authorize those 6 charges. I call the bank to do that and am told that I have to go into a branch to file the dispute. How long will this take to process? Likely 7-10 days.

I'm so drained and I just want to crawl back into bed and hide. Thank god the doctor also prescribed me some Zoloft.

And then I went to sleep. I'm kind of scared about this heart thing cause I don't feel any different so who knows what kind of stress has been on my heart. It was first detected in the hospital 3 months ago, but who knows how long it was going on before then, and if it continued since I've been out. I've gotten my pulse checked a couple of times at various doctors and no one's been THIS concerned, so I'm inclined to think that it comes and goes. Still, if you could think some good thoughs, that'd be cool. Going next Monday for the bloodwork. I also find out next Thursday whether or not I have arthritis or Wild Screeching Monkey Pox. Taking bets now.

Just gotta keep looking at those pictures and taking deep breaths.
