Only suckers work today
Man I wish I wasn't a sucker.

16.5 hours til 2007 is history! I cooked/prepped most of the party food last night. After work today will be the mac & cheese, actually baking the sausage nut streudels, and making the pigs in a blanket. The party menu and recipes can be found here on GroupRecipes with a few edits. I could not for the life of me find frozen artichoke hearts so fried artichokes are out. I've also added this dried cherry (well, cranberry for me) and green onion spread.

Eeeek, gotta finish getting ready! Happy New Year if I don't manage to post again!

Oh, and I resolve to make more real posts, fewer Tweets/Photos.

Operation Get Back in Shape
I just signed Nate and I up for a gym. Boston Sports Club opened a new location one stop away from here and had amazing charter membership rates so we went with it. I'm very excited because they have all sorts of water classes like aqua kickbox and aqua circuit.

Virtual insanity
I'm taking a 2-week condensed semester stats course beginning next Thursday. It'll run next Thurs & Fri, then the following Weds-Fri, then the following Mon-Fri. 10 classes, 6-10 pm. I work 9-5. It'll take me about an hour to get home from school.

I'm gonna die. BUT I will get it over with.

If only MGH would get the responses out.

Todd Kazakiewich!
A rare evening finds us watching the local news. There was a report from Weston on the pike's efforts to recoup some budget deficits by a man with a unique name. The cadance and rhythm of it sparked a distant memory in me, like I knew him from somewhere.

And I did! He used to be on Hartford's WFSB, which was my news station of choice. It was like going home after being away. Yes, I do still miss Hartford. Yes, I'm aware of how lame that is. :P

New boots!
Neighbors. I implore you. Clear your walkways! You may think it's all fine because, after all, you can walk from your door to the door of your behemoth automobile with no problem! Well, it's not. Especially when you live alongside a major thoroughfare. It's no fun to be tiptoeing and sliding along an icy sidewalk and hit a waist-deep wall of snow that you then have to get around to walk in the street. With cars whizzing by doing 40.

The upshot of this is that I got new boots! Warm cozy water-resistant ice-gripping boots. Guess we really have assimilated into commuter culture with our boots and our "real shoes" in our bags. Fashion be damned, it's COLD out there. I laugh when I think of complaining about walking from the garage to the office. It was a state lot, they plowed it and salted it! I could wear one pair of shoes all day!

But then after cursing the snow most of the day, I came home and read Lisa's post about Molly's day in the snow and the pictures just melted my heart. Look at the joy in her face and in her step!

I'll try to remember that as we're digging Nate's car out because we need groceries. Y'know, after it's been sitting all day in the melting-refreezing snow.

Edited: SEE? THIS is why people need to get off their asses and shovel their damn walks.

2000 miles is very far through the snow
My new office has an amazing view of the harbor. I can see the very tops of buildings from my cube if I pop my head up a bit. At 12:30 I looked up and saw whiteness. At first I thought it was maybe the fog before the storm but when I got up and walked closer I found the truth.

At that point we were still supposed to have a normal day so I cursed Nate because he was being let out at 1, but resigned myself to the rest of the day. After all, I don't drive at any point in my commute so I'd really just be whining over nothing. Plus I had a meeting at 3.

THEN the most coveted of all emails came: The office would be closing at 2! Suddenly the snow was a lot prettier. I chatted with a guy on the elevator and practically twirled out of the building. I took a picture of it (see previous post) and got down to the subway. That was all cool. Got a seat on both trains, got to the station.

Walked outside to get the bus and found ... a hell of a lot more snow than when I went underground.

Two of my buses came near the station and went to "Out of Service" before turning in. The rest of the waiting passengers and I considered commandeering one of said buses but then one that would get us somewhat near where we were all going so we got on it. It got me to within a half mile of my house and I walked the rest of the way home. My coat and belongings should dry out sometime in the next week.

Still, I'm glad I wasn't driving. And now I've been home safe and warm for a few hours watching Day 6 of 24.

Thanks, Mass RMV!
So despite the fact that my 12 forms of ID and documentation clearly showed my named as Flannery, the RMV interpreted it as ...
